SARGASSUM AND TOURISM

SARGASSUM AND TOURISM

How has sargassum affected tourism in Mexico?
We know that in our country we have paradisiacal places, which year after year are visited by thousands of tourists, however, due to the sargassum issue, one of the most representative tourist destinations such as Cancun, has been extremely affected.

Despite the great efforts made by the Federal Government and the businessmen of Quintana Roo, the sargassum problem is growing and the most appropriate way to eradicate it has not been found, because it is not known what to do with it.

NATSPACE

The main objective of NATSPACE is to ally with the Federal Government, State Government and state businessmen, to root out the problem that sargassum has brought with it, so that there is the possibility of once again increasing tourist visits, activity which is the main source of income for Quintana Roo.

According to statements made at the HIGH-LEVEL MEETING FOR THE ATTENTION OF SARGASSUM, which took place on June 27, 2019, 87% of Quintana Roo's GDP comes from tourism. After the low season and the impact on the high season, which will again be followed by another low season, Quintana Roo has been badly hit economically for a year and a half, a situation that could seriously affect several businesses, causing them to close.

Among the most affected beaches, Cancun, Playa del Carmen and TulĂșm stand out with some 1,000 kilometers affected.

For their part, the hotels have set up nets to try to keep the tide of algae out to sea, away from the beaches; while workers and volunteers clean the shore with shovels and wheelbarrows.

In one day they can collect up to a ton, according to the Quintana Roo government. However, sargassum removal is time consuming, expensive and, for many, an ineffective way to treat the problem.

Clean energy

The pollution reduction compared to a sanitary landfill is approximately 97%, optimizing the use of clean fuels and energies, effectively reducing the environmental impact.
